Daily journal December 3, 2000, I did it right this time, returning from Lehigh, big snow.

I stopped at the Holiday End the south of Richmond, Va. about midnight to call home.  I watched the Weather Channel on the lobby TV and the weather map showed all over my intended route of travel as being covered by major snowstorm South on I-85 also on I-95 in Eastern N.C..  At first I could not decide whether or not to check in and to wait out the storm or to proceed being tired of course and so very sleepy.  The picture in my mind was of smoke rising from the tobacco plants in this tobacco hub and I did not want to breathe the factory air.  After awhile of resting in the lobby I spoke with the desk clerk who just happen to mention that I may be stuck here for three days due to the forecast of snowfall tonight.  This motivated me to leave and drive toward home as fast as possible and I did just that.  The no man's land pine forest of Virginia endless headed toward dirty Durham N.C., past Washington and Henderson, I could see in the night sky a heavy white cloud formation to the Southeast and I have rest stopped twice to sleep at the rest stops which I somehow feel that God had put there for my benefit for me for this very night.  Each time falling into a sound sleep laying down on the seat and awaken after an hour or so amazed that snow had not fallen yet.  I wanted to fill up with fuel but waited until I could make sure of reaching home without another service station experience.  Filling up near the NC border, it was my hard luck to get a very slow pump and as I have sit in the car resting my eyes, the automatic shut off did not work due to the slow pump was pumping gas out on the ground.  At the break of day I was coming into Durham and the sky was clear and I've been seeing the stars all night no matter what the Weather Channel has shown from the satellite and I thank God for I believe he is holding off the snow until I get home.  I had breakfast near Burlington and passed through Greensboro wanting to use my phone to call home but it was discharged.  I finally stopped near Charlotte and slept still again and while the kind lady plugged my phone in for me to charge and then I call home and it was snowing while I was in sunshine.  I stopped at the South Carolina Welcome Center and ask about the road ahead and was told that a report from the Highway Patrol said it is OK to travel with no icing reported, I proceeded at full speed and as I passed Gaffney I ran in to snow heavy and by Spartanburg it turned into blinding snow with a white out of all the road and suddenly I was on solid ice and the traffic slowed to 15 miles per hour and to 5 miles per hour as I came upon dozens of cars wrecked like a big field of destruction and people in the road.  The Interstate was reduced to one lane only visible and I wondered where the sand trucks may be.  At this point I feared that I might not make it home but I did.  I did the right thing and I thank God for guiding me.  As I have passed through the tobacco producing and processing areas I am saddened at all the suffering this has caused people that have been killed and victims to this vise of Satan.  Why have we let it go on an even corrupt other nations as Joe Camel is reported to now be appearing in Romania and about to appear in China and other countries of course to satisfy the greed of Brown and Williamson, of Legitt Myers in Durham with their towers of death so clearly visible.  Why are we destroying ourselves with this wicked weed?  I am now so proud to be home.

Andy Rooney said tonight on CBS 60 Minutes (was very amusing) as he pretended to be talking to a foreigner about our election system of trying to explain it as fair when the daddy of both governors was president and before that was head of CIA and that the man did not win the election, trying to explain the Electoral College.  Let us live by faith and not by man with earthly hands.  Thank God for life and understanding of the spiritual.  Read the Word of God Daily and treasury it, remembering that many died for it in time.
